Moving to the Netherlands from Mexico

Tailored for Mexican citizens

Your relocation snapshot Moderate

Entry: MVV + residence permit required for stays over 90 days — ~€210. Mexico permits dual citizenship, so becoming Dutch later won't cost you it. The Netherlands costs roughly 1.7× more to live in day-to-day than Mexico, while typical pay is about 4.5× higher.

Recommended path

Mexicans mostly arrive on the Kennismigrant visa in tech and finance, or convert a Dutch student visa into a search-year permit after graduating.

  • A visa is required to enter — budget the fee and processing time before you book anything.
  • No working-holiday route is open to you, so that shortcut isn't on the table.
  • No driver's licence exchange agreement — plan on the local test.

The BSN: your master key

The Burgerservicenummer (BSN) is the single number that unlocks Dutch life — your employer needs it to pay you, your bank needs it to open an account, your health insurer needs it to enroll you, and the tax office needs it for everything else. You get it automatically when you register your address at the gemeente (municipality) — book the "eerste inschrijving" appointment online as early as you can, since Amsterdam and Utrecht gemeentes routinely have multi-week waits in 2026. Bring your passport, rental contract or homeowner’s statement, and (if applicable) your residence permit decision letter. The BSN itself is free and is issued the same day or within a few working days by post.

Residence permits via the IND

Non-EU/EEA nationals need a residence permit from the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst). Most employer-sponsored routes (Kennismigrant, EU Blue Card, ICT) are handled through the "recognized sponsor" fast-track: your employer applies on your behalf and the IND aims to decide within 2 weeks for recognized sponsors, versus up to 90 days for standard applications. You’ll collect a biometric residence document (verblijfsdocument) at an IND desk after arrival — bring your BSN confirmation and passport. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens skip the IND step entirely and only need gemeente registration.

Health insurance: the four-month clock

Anyone who works in the Netherlands or is otherwise deemed a resident for social security purposes must buy Dutch basic health insurance (zorgverzekering) within 4 months of becoming liable — typically your start-of-employment or registration date. Miss it and the Zorginstituut Nederland can impose a fine plus backdate the premium you owe for the uninsured months; persistent non-compliance can trigger an automatic default policy at a surcharge. This is one of the most commonly missed deadlines by new arrivals who assume enrollment is optional.

The first-30-days checklist

Tick things off as you go — this list lives in your browser for this visit.

Driving licence exchange

The Netherlands has direct driving-licence exchange agreements (no retest required) with all EU/EEA states, plus Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Israel, the Dutch Caribbean territories (Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Saba), and limited Canadian provinces (Alberta, Québec). If your home country isn’t on the list — the US, UK (post-Brexit for most residents), Australia, and most others are not — you’ll need to pass a Dutch theory and practical exam through the CBR, a process many expats find surprisingly demanding and costly (€1,000+ all-in with lessons). Always verify current agreements at RDW.nl before assuming eligibility, as the list is revised periodically.

Permanent residency and citizenship

After 5 years of continuous, legal residence (with only limited permitted absences) you can apply for a Dutch permanent residence permit (EU long-term resident or "type II" permit). Naturalization follows the same 5-year continuous residence benchmark, a passed inburgering (civic integration) exam, and no significant criminal record; the application fee is roughly €225 per adult in 2026.

Watch for this

The Netherlands generally requires you to renounce your prior nationality to naturalize — but there are real exceptions: your birth country doesn’t legally permit renunciation, you’re married to or the registered partner of a Dutch citizen, you were born in the Netherlands and still live there, you hold refugee/asylum status, you’re a minor included in a parent’s application, or renunciation would cause "disproportionate hardship." If none apply, plan on giving up your original passport — a decision worth making with a Dutch immigration lawyer, not a forum thread.

🇲🇽 If you hold a Mexican passport

Your entry class: MVV + residence permit required for stays over 90 days — ~€210. the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst)'s recently published processing time for visitors from Mexico is 2-4 weeks with a recognized sponsor, though this moves weekly.

🇲🇽 Your documents

Documents from Mexico can be apostilled rather than consular-legalised for use in the Netherlands, since both countries are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. One stamp from the issuing authority, no embassy chain.

🇲🇽 Your driver's licence

Mexican licence holders must pass the Dutch CBR theory and practical exams; 30%-ruling holders can exchange any country’s licence instead.Newcomers without an exchange agreement must pass both the Dutch CBR theory exam and practical driving test to get a Dutch licence — a process many find slower and costlier than expected due to long CBR test-slot waiting lists, though holders of the 30% tax ruling can exchange a licence from any country without a test.

🇲🇽 If you later become Dutch

Mexico permits dual citizenship, so becoming Dutch does not cost you your original nationality.

The short version

Register at the gemeente for your BSN before doing anything else — bank, employer payroll, and health insurer all require it — then buy basic health insurance within four months of becoming a resident or face a backdated fine.

Dutch immigration salary thresholds, the 30% ruling percentage, and rent-regulation rules are revised at least once a year (often on 1 January and 1 July) — treat the figures below as a strong 2026 baseline and confirm exact numbers on ind.nl and belastingdienst.nl before you sign anything.
