Moving to New Zealand from India

Tailored for Indian citizens

Your relocation snapshot Complex

Entry: Visitor Visa required — ~NZ$441 (visa + levy + IVL, plus VAC fee). Becoming a New Zealand citizen would mean giving up your Indian passport. New Zealand costs roughly 3.4× more to live in day-to-day than India, while typical pay is about 6.4× higher.

Recommended path

Most Indians reach NZ via the Skilled Migrant Category (IT, engineering, healthcare) or the Accredited Employer Work Visa, often after study at an NZ institution on a student-to-work pipeline.

  • A visa is required to enter — budget the fee and processing time before you book anything.
  • No working-holiday route is open to you, so that shortcut isn't on the table.
  • No driver's licence exchange agreement — plan on the local test.

Bureaucracy

The paperwork that turns a landing card into a working, taxed, insured life in New Zealand — IRD numbers, GP enrolment, driving, and the long road to citizenship.

Week one: the IRD number

Nothing else works until you have an IRD number from Inland Revenue. Apply online at ird.govt.nz once you have a RealMe login and, ideally, an NZ bank account — but you don’t strictly need the bank account first: IRD will issue a number to a new migrant using passport and visa details alone, it just takes a little longer (up to 10 working days instead of 8). Give the number and a completed IR330 tax code declaration to your employer before your first payday. Skip this and you’re taxed at the "no-notification" rate — a punishing 45% — until it’s sorted, refundable only after you file.

Getting into the health system

New Zealand runs universal, publicly funded healthcare through Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora, but eligibility for free and subsidised care depends on your visa: citizens, permanent residents, and most work-visa holders granted for 2+ years qualify from day one; visitor and short work visas generally don’t. Enrol with a general practice (GP) as soon as you have an address — enrolled patients pay a subsidised fee (commonly $20–$50 per visit) instead of the full $80–$120 casual rate, and unenrolled newcomers in fast-growing suburbs can wait weeks for a practice to have capacity. Ask about a Community Services Card if your income is modest — it lowers GP and prescription costs further.

The first-30-days checklist

Tick things off as you go — this list lives in your browser for this visit.

Driving on an overseas licence

You can drive in New Zealand on a current overseas licence (with an English translation if needed) for a transitional period after arrival, but converting sooner avoids problems with rental cars, car finance and some jobs. Holders of a full car licence issued two or more years ago in one of the countries below convert with a straightforward application, an eyesight check and a fee — no test required:

English-speakingAustralia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States
EuropeAustria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland

From any other country — including much of Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America outside the list above — you’ll sit a written theory test and a full practical test, the same as a first-time local driver, though you can usually skip the learner and restricted stages if you already hold a genuine full licence.

The long game: residence to citizenship

Most migrants arrive on a temporary work or student visa, move to a resident visa (via the Skilled Migrant Category, an employer pathway, or family/investor routes — see Visas), then apply for citizenship by naturalisation once they’ve been a resident for at least 5 years and can show they’ve genuinely lived in New Zealand during that time, not just held a visa on paper. The Department of Internal Affairs’ presence self-check tool is the fastest way to confirm you meet the time-in-country test before you pay the application fee. Citizenship brings an NZ passport, the right to vote, and — usefully — visa-free access to Australia’s labour market that residents alone don’t get.

Watch for this

Employers cannot pay you correctly without an IRD number and tax code on file, and banks increasingly require an IRD number to open a full-service account. Chase the IRD number the day you land — treat it as more urgent than furniture shopping.

🇮🇳 If you hold an Indian passport

Your entry class: Visitor Visa required — ~NZ$441 (visa + levy + IVL, plus VAC fee). Immigration New Zealand's recently published processing time for visitors from India is Around 2-4 weeks; 80% of visitor visas decided within 2 weeks, though this moves weekly.

🇮🇳 Your documents

India is a Hague Apostille Convention member — documents can be apostilled, no consular legalization chain needed.

🇮🇳 Your driver's licence

India is not on NZTA's exempt-country list — a theory and practical driving test is required to convert.Newcomers without a full conversion agreement must pass an NZ road-rules theory test to get a learner licence, then book a practical test at an AA Driver Licensing agent — most people take lessons first, and the whole process from theory pass to full licence can take several months under NZ's staged licensing system.

🇮🇳 If you later become a New Zealand citizen

India does not allow dual citizenship; naturalizing elsewhere means automatically losing Indian citizenship — plan for an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card instead, which gives lifelong visa-free entry and property rights but not voting or government jobs.

The short version

Apply for your IRD number and enrol with a GP in week one — without both, you lose money to emergency tax and pay full price for routine care. Citizenship needs 5 years as a resident with real presence in the country, not just a visa in your passport.

Sources & how current this is

New Zealand rewrote its points system, median wage, investor visa and foreign-buyer rules across 2025–2026 — several of the figures below (the SMC threshold, AEWV wage settings, Active Investor Plus tiers) are recent enough that Immigration New Zealand’s own settings can still shift.
