Moving to Spain from Vietnam

Tailored for Vietnamese citizens

Your relocation snapshot Moderate

Entry: Schengen (type C) visa required — €90 Schengen visa fee. Vietnam permits dual citizenship, so becoming Spanish later won't cost you it. Spain costs roughly 1.7× more to live in day-to-day than Vietnam, while typical pay is about 4.4× higher.

Recommended path

A student-visa-to-work pathway and family reunification through the existing Vietnamese community are most common; direct work visas require employer sponsorship.

  • A visa is required to enter — budget the fee and processing time before you book anything.
  • No driver's licence exchange agreement — plan on the local test.
  • Dual citizenship is permitted — you keep your original passport.

Bureaucracy

Spain runs on two ID numbers, a town-hall registration, and patience — get the sequence right and everything else moves faster.

Free–€16NIE application fee (Modelo 790-012)
Same dayEmpadronamiento at your town hall
5 yrsContinuous residence to permanent residency
10 / 2 yrsCitizenship: standard / Ibero-American track

NIE vs TIE — two numbers, two purposes

Everyone confuses these. Your NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a tax and identification number — you need it to open a bank account, sign a lease, get a phone contract, or pay taxes. It never expires and it is not proof of legal residence. The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical residency card, tied to your visa and its renewal dates. Non-EU nationals get both; EU/EEA citizens only need an NIE (issued as a green certificado de registro) since free-movement rules mean no TIE is required. Apply for the NIE via cita previa (online appointment booking) at a police station (Comisaría de Policía — Oficina de Extranjeros) or a Spanish consulate before you move; appointment slots in Madrid and Barcelona regularly book out 4–8 weeks ahead, so book the moment your visa is approved.

Empadronamiento: the registration that unlocks everything else

Within your first weeks you must register at your local ayuntamiento (town hall) to get on the padrón municipal — proof of your address. This single piece of paper (the certificado de empadronamiento) is required to enrol kids in school, register for public healthcare, get a resident parking permit, and — in Madrid and Barcelona especially — to even open some bank accounts or sign certain leases. It costs nothing and is usually issued same-day if you bring your rental contract (or a signed authorization from the property owner) plus your passport and NIE.

The first-30-days checklist

Tick things off as you go — this list lives in your browser for this visit.

Driving licences: the well-known trap

Spain (via the DGT, the traffic authority) only exchanges licences from countries with a bilateral agreement — roughly three dozen, including the UK, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, and most of Latin America. No US state has an exchange agreement with Spain, and neither do Canada, Australia, China, or India — a fact that surprises a huge share of American arrivals every year. If your country/state isn’t on the list, you have 6 months of legal driving on your home licence (with an International Driving Permit alongside it) before you must pass the full Spanish theory and practical exams to drive legally long-term.

Path to permanent status
MilestoneRequirement
Permanent residency (larga duración)5 continuous years of legal residence
Citizenship — standard track10 years of legal residence, renounce prior nationality
Citizenship — Ibero-American track2 years for nationals of Latin American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, and Portugal — dual nationality kept
2025 reform: extraordinary arraigoNew regularization windows (through mid-2026) for undocumented residents already in Spain — 5+ months residence plus work, family, or vulnerability ties
Watch for this

Spain generally requires renouncing your original nationality to naturalize — the 2-year Ibero-American exception (and reciprocal-treaty countries) is the main way to keep dual nationality. Everyone else effectively loses their original passport on paper, even though many countries (the US among them) don’t recognize the renunciation as valid domestically, creating a legal gray zone worth discussing with an immigration lawyer before applying.

🇻🇳 If you hold a Vietnamese passport

Your entry class: Schengen (type C) visa required — €90 Schengen visa fee. the Spanish immigration office (Extranjería)'s recently published processing time for visitors from Vietnam is 15-30 days processing, though this moves weekly.

🇻🇳 Your documents

Vietnam’s Apostille Convention accession takes effect 11 September 2026 — before that date, documents needed consular legalization.

🇻🇳 Your driver's licence

Vietnam has no licence-exchange agreement with Spain, so Vietnamese licence holders must pass the full DGT theory and practical driving exams.Newcomers without an exchange agreement must pass Spain’s standard DGT process: a theory exam (offered in Spanish and several other languages at some centers) followed by a practical driving test, exactly like a first-time Spanish learner driver.

🇻🇳 If you later become Spanish

Vietnam’s law states a single-nationality principle but has no automatic-loss ground for foreign naturalization, and a 2025 amendment liberalises retention further — in practice people keep Vietnamese nationality unless they formally renounce it.

The short version

Get your NIE first, register your address (empadronamiento) within days of arriving, then apply for the TIE card and Social Security number — in that order. Almost every US driving licence is useless in Spain because no US state has an exchange agreement.

Sources & how current this is

Spanish immigration and tax rules have moved unusually fast since 2025 — the Golden Visa was abolished, a new Digital Nomad Visa and Beckham Law regime took effect, and a major Reglamento de Extranjería reform landed in May 2025 with further regularization measures rolling out into 2026. Confirm income thresholds, IPREM-linked figures, and contribution tiers on the official sites above before filing anything, since several update annually or mid-year.
