Visas & immigration: the Netherlands
The Kennismigrant route dominates skilled migration to the Netherlands, but the 30% ruling's real 2026 value is smaller than most guides still claim.
Highly Skilled Migrant (Kennismigrant)
The Kennismigrant permit is the main door for skilled non-EU workers. Your employer must be an IND-recognized sponsor, and your gross monthly salary (excluding 8% holiday allowance) must clear the age-banded 2026 threshold: โฌ4,357/month under age 30, or โฌ5,942/month at 30 and over. These figures reset every January 1st, so always check ind.nl before signing an offer close to year-end. Processing for recognized sponsors typically runs about 2 weeks, dramatically faster than standard work-permit routes.
The 30% ruling โ get this one right
The 30% ruling (expat scheme) lets a qualifying employer pay up to 30% of your salary tax-free as a reimbursement for the cost of relocating, for a maximum of 5 years (cut down from 8 years in 2019). Many older articles still describe a stepped 30/20/10% scheme legislated for 2024 โ that stepdown was reversed before it took effect, and as of 2026 the ruling still pays a flat 30% for the full eligibility window. The real upcoming change: for employees whose ruling starts on or after 1 January 2027, the rate drops to 27%. If your ruling already started before 2027, you keep 30% for your remaining eligible years. The minimum taxable salary to qualify in 2026 is โฌ48,013/year (or โฌ36,497/year for under-30s with a qualifying masterโs degree).

EU Blue Card
The EU Blue Card targets highly educated non-EU professionals and requires a recognized university degree plus a job offer meeting the same โฌ5,942/month threshold as the 30+ Kennismigrant band in 2026. It offers EU-wide labor mobility advantages after 12 months that a national Kennismigrant permit doesnโt, which matters if you might later work elsewhere in the EU.
DAFT โ the US-only shortcut
The Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) is a unique bilateral deal open only to US citizens: deposit just โฌ4,500 into a Dutch business bank account, register a sole proprietorship (ZZP) or BV, and you get a self-employment residence permit with none of the salary thresholds, business plans, or point systems other self-employment routes require. Itโs renewed every 2 years and is widely considered the easiest self-employment visa in the EU for the nationality it covers.
Other routes
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have unrestricted free movement โ no permit needed, just gemeente registration. Students need an accepted enrollment at a recognized institution plus proof of funds (around โฌ1,300+/month in 2026); the institution often handles the IND application. Recent graduates of a Dutch or top-ranked non-Dutch university can apply for the zoekjaar (orientation year) permit โ one year with no employer sponsorship needed to find skilled work, after which you must transition to Kennismigrant or another route.
Salary thresholds and the 30% ruling percentage both reset on a schedule set by the Dutch cabinet and can shift with little notice โ always confirm the live number on ind.nl and belastingdienst.nl rather than trusting a cached figure, including this one, once more than a few months have passed.
Highly Skilled Migrant sponsorship is still the fastest route in, the 30% ruling still pays 30% for people starting before 2027 but drops to 27% for new entrants from January 2027, and US citizens have a unique low-bar self-employment path via DAFT that almost no other nationality gets.
Sources & how current this is
Dutch immigration salary thresholds, the 30% ruling percentage, and rent-regulation rules are revised at least once a year (often on 1 January and 1 July) โ treat the figures below as a strong 2026 baseline and confirm exact numbers on ind.nl and belastingdienst.nl before you sign anything.
