Banking in New Zealand

Verified Sep 2026

Which of the big four banks will open an account before you land, what the everyday fees look like, and why your card will mostly be tapping, not swiping.

New Zealandโ€™s big four

Retail banking is dominated by ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac, all Australian-owned, alongside smaller players like Kiwibank (NZ-owned) and BNZโ€™s digital-first sibling. All four majors offer a pre-arrival migrant banking pathway: you apply online from overseas with your passport, visa approval and proof of an incoming salary or job offer, and they issue an account number and debit card details before you land so your first payslip has somewhere to go. Full access โ€” internet banking limits, cheque deposits, credit products โ€” typically unlocks once you complete identity verification in person or via RealMe within your first weeks in the country, using your passport and an NZ residential address.

What actually costs money

Everyday transaction and savings accounts at all four majors are fee-free for standard use โ€” no monthly account-keeping fee, no charge for EFTPOS purchases or using your own bankโ€™s ATMs. Where the cost shows up: using another bankโ€™s ATM (commonly $2โ€“$3.50 per withdrawal), overdrawing without arranging it first, and โ€” the big one for a new migrant โ€” international money transfers, where banks typically build a 1โ€“3% margin into the exchange rate on top of a flat wire fee. Specialist transfer services (Wise, OFX, and similar) are usually cheaper than a bank-to-bank transfer for moving your savings over.

Building a New Zealand credit history

Thereโ€™s no single imported "credit score" โ€” New Zealand runs on comprehensive credit reporting through bureaus like Centrix and Equifax NZ, and yours starts from zero on arrival regardless of your credit history at home. Build it deliberately: get a NZ mobile plan and utility account in your own name and pay them on time, use a low-limit credit card or store card lightly and clear it monthly, and avoid missed payments โ€” even a small unpaid phone bill can show up as a default and complicate a car loan or mortgage application later. Landlords, some employers and most lenders will check a credit file, so a thin but clean history beats no history at all.

EFTPOS: New Zealandโ€™s cashless default

New Zealand adopted card payments early and thoroughly โ€” EFTPOS (debit card, tap or PIN) is the default for everything from a coffee to a car, and contactless/tap-to-pay is near-universal in cities. Cash is genuinely optional day to day; some smaller regional businesses still prefer it, and a few charge a small surcharge on credit card transactions to cover interchange fees, but debit EFTPOS is essentially always free at the till.

Watch for this

A pre-arrival account only fully activates after in-person or RealMe identity verification. If you land without a passport-matching address ready or your RealMe isnโ€™t verified, your account can stay in a limited "restricted" state โ€” call ahead to confirm exactly what you need to bring on day one.

The short version

ANZ, ASB, BNZ and Westpac all let eligible migrants start an account online before arrival so salary can land on day one; you finish identity verification with a passport and NZ address once youโ€™re here. Everyday banking is free at all four โ€” the cost to watch is international transfer margins, not account fees.

Sources & how current this is

New Zealand rewrote its points system, median wage, investor visa and foreign-buyer rules across 2025โ€“2026 โ€” several of the figures below (the SMC threshold, AEWV wage settings, Active Investor Plus tiers) are recent enough that Immigration New Zealandโ€™s own settings can still shift.
